Yusanji is a Buddhist temple located in Fukuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture, boasting a profound history of over 1,300 years. Known as the 'Sacred Mountain of the Eyes,' it has been a site of pilgrimage for many generations. The temple grounds are home to numerous historical structures and treasures, including the Yakushi Nyorai Shushi (a medicinal Buddha shrine) and a Three-story Pagoda, both designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Walking through the temple grounds allows visitors to experience the essence of traditional Japanese Buddhist culture firsthand.
The temple possesses an incredibly long-standing history. The Yakushi-do hall, which enshrines Yakushi Nyorai, contains a golden, palace-like shrine (shushi) believed to have been donated by the famous daimyo Imagawa Yoshimoto; it is considered a masterpiece of the Muromachi period. Historical records of repairs dating back to the Tensho era (1572–1592) demonstrate how the temple has been meticulously preserved through the ages. Traditional events such as 'Hyakumanben,' which has continued since the Edo period, remain an important part of its living culture.
The primary highlights of Yusanji are the National Important Cultural Properties: the 'Yakushi Nyorai Shushi' and the 'Three-story Pagoda.' The Yakushi Nyorai Shushi, housed within the Yakushi-do hall, is characterized by its magnificent construction adorned with chrysanthemum crests, preserving the architectural style of the Muromachi period. The Three-story Pagoda also adds a sense of historical depth to the landscape. Visitors can also explore the interior of buildings such as the Hojo, Hosho-den, and Shoin.
Visitors can enjoy different seasonal events and scenery at Yusanji. For instance, on April 21st, the Kobo Daishi Festival is held, featuring traditional bamboo shoot dishes. Another significant event is the 'Hyakumanben' held on August 8th, a tradition dating back to the Edo period. Standard visiting hours are generally between 9:00 and 16:30 (last admission/reception ends at 16:30). Please check the official website for specific seasonal events or special prayer services.
Step away from daily life and connect with Buddhist teachings through various spiritual training programs. Available activities include Zazen (seated meditation), Shakyo (Sutra copying), Shakubutsu (copying Buddhist images), and Takigyo (waterfall training). Sutra copying and Shakubutsu can be participated in by individuals (approx. 30 minutes), while groups of 10 or more can also request a Dharma talk (Howa). For those interested in Takigyo (waterfall training), please bring a swimsuit and a towel. Note that these experiences require advance reservation.
Yusanji is nestled in the natural beauty of Fukuroi City, Shizuoka. It is easily accessible by car via the Fukuroi Interchange on the Tomei Expressway or the Morikakegawa Interchange on the Shin-Tomei Expressway. The surrounding area is dotted with various spots to enjoy Shizuoka's nature and history, making it a popular destination for driving or touring.
When visiting a temple, appropriate attire and etiquette are required. If you plan to participate in Takigyo (waterfall training), you must bring a swimsuit and a towel. Please ensure you have cash (Japanese Yen) ready for admission fees and activity fees. Most spiritual experiences (Zazen, Dharma talks, etc.) require advance reservation via phone or online form. As the temple protects precious cultural properties, please respect photography restrictions and general-use etiquette. The temple is wheelchair accessible, with designated entrances, restrooms, and seating available.
