Guide
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a design research center built around the concept of "seeing the world through design." Rather than a conventional exhibition space, it serves as a hub for contemplating the essence of design and exploring the frontiers of craftsmanship. Led by a distinguished group of directors including Issey Miyake, Taku Satoh, and Naoto Fukasawa, the center provides a unique lens to discover and shape design as a culture that enriches daily life.
The facility was founded with the involvement of fashion designer Issey Miyake and was designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. The structure, intended to serve as a landmark of Japanese design, embodies the fundamental philosophies and techniques of the craft. With directors like Taku Satoh and Naoto Fukasawa playing key roles, the center has established a cultural foundation for understanding the multifaceted nature of design in the modern era.

The exhibition content is constantly evolving through curated special exhibitions. Programs are designed to present the processes of design, new perspectives, and how design integrates into everyday life. The architecture itself is a major highlight; Tadao Ando's design features a masterful use of light and space, offering an immersive experience where the exhibits and the building become one. Additionally, the onsite gallery shop, "21_21 NANJA MONJA," offers unique products and original goods that allow visitors to touch the essence of contemporary design.
The center is open from 10:00 to 19:00. We highly recommend visiting during the daytime to experience the harmony between the architectural structure and natural light. The way the light shifts throughout the afternoon is a unique experience specific to this building. We suggest checking the current exhibition schedule in advance to experience the specific design themes of the season.

Beyond viewing exhibitions, visitors can participate in programs such as "cross-talk" sessions to gain deeper insights into design. You can also bring a piece of design into your daily life by purchasing unique items at the shop. It is an opportunity not just to "see" design, but to engage with the philosophy and technology behind it.
Located in the Roppongi area of Tokyo, the center is near major commercial facilities like Tokyo Midtown, as well as numerous other museums and art spots. After your visit, you can enjoy the sophisticated urban culture of Tokyo by spending time at nearby cafes and restaurants.
To enjoy the exhibitions comfortably, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Regarding photography, please follow the specific instructions for each exhibition, as some areas may prohibit photography to protect the artworks and ensure safety. Credit cards and transportation IC cards (such as Suica/Pasmo) can be used for purchases at the shop. Please check the official website if a specific program requires advanced reservations.
