Event Overview

The National Kyudo Tournament is a prestigious traditional archery competition held at the historic Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka. Sumiyoshi Taisha has long been revered as a sanctuary for the protection of bows and arrows, lending a sacred and solemn atmosphere to the event. The highlight of this tournament is the 'Enteki' (long-distance) competition. Unlike standard matches, this discipline requires archers to strike targets from much greater distances, demanding extraordinary precision, mental fortitude, and technical mastery.

The most captivating moment is the 'Enteki' competition, where archers attempt to strike a target with a diameter of 100cm (79cm in the finals) from a distance of 60 meters. The tension of the silence before the arrow is released, followed by the sudden impact of a successful hit, is truly mesmerizing. Set against the backdrop of the sacred Main Shrine and the special archery grounds of Sumiyoshi Taisha, the event offers a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese landscapes and disciplined martial arts movements. The practice of Kyudo incorporates elements of 'Zen,' allowing spectators to experience the depth of Japanese spiritual culture beyond just a sport.

Schedule

The event takes place on May 1st. The schedule is as follows:

• 08:30: Hebime-hosha (Ritual Shooting)
• 08:50: Opening Ceremony (Held even in light rain)

Competitions consist of both team matches (3 members per team) and individual matches. Based on the Enteki rules, participants perform 4 shots (12 shots for teams) to determine winners through high-level technical skill and precision.

Participant Information

Participants must complete the official application form and submit it along with the participation fee to the designated location. The deadline for applications is April 1st. Competitions are divided into Team (Men/Women) and Individual (Men/Women) categories. Spectators are welcome to arrive in time for the start of the matches. Please note that while the opening ceremony proceeds in light rain, schedules may change due to weather; it is recommended to check for updates.
