Event Overview

The Hassaku Festival is a traditional ritual held at Nagaoo Tsurugi Shrine, located along the shores of the Shiranui Sea (Yatsushiro Sea) in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture. This historic shrine was founded in 713 AD by the decree of Empress Genmei. The name 'Tsurugi' is said to come from the local topography, and the shrine is famous for its iconic torii gate that stands within the sea. The festival is held to coincide with 'Hassaku' (the 1st day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar), a time deeply cherished by the local community.

The greatest draw is the mystical view of the torii gate standing in the water against the backdrop of the Shiranui Sea. According to local legend, the 'Shiranui'—a mysterious mirage or light phenomenon—appears during the early hours of the morning at low tide during this season.
