3 min readEvent Overview
The Yagoto Fire Festival and Thousand Lantern Memorial Service is held on October 31 at Yagotozan Koshoji Temple in Nagoya. The day features a chigo procession led by children.
About Yagotozan Koshoji Temple
Yagotozan Koshoji is a Bekkaku Honzan of the Kōyasan Shingon sect. Founded in the Edo period, it served as a prayer temple for the Owari Tokugawa family. The five-story pagoda on the grounds is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
As the prayer temple of the Owari Tokugawa family, it has deep ties with successive lords and their kin. The temple houses many treasures, including a five-pronged vajra once owned by Kōbō Daishi and a robe of the monk Ganjin. The nature-rich grounds are beloved by many visitors.
Temple Facilities
On the ground floor of Fushōden Hall, there is a cafe called Library Salon Kegū, a space for visitors to converse with monks. For goshuin and other amulets, inquire at the nōkyō office on the ground floor of Kōmyōden Hall, west of the five-story pagoda.
Participating in the Chigo Procession
Participation requires advance application. The priority application period was May 21 to June 30 (for families with connections to Koshoji, such as cemetery plots), and the general application period was July 1 to September 30 (open to all). Applications have closed.
