Workshop: Learn the Structure of Byobu & Nihonga Painting

Event Overview

"WS Learn the Structure of Byobu + Nihonga Painting" is a special workshop held at the Hanatori Otsuka Museum. This program allows you to explore the structure of the traditional Japanese folding screen (Byobu) and learn the techniques of Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). It is organized in connection with the special exhibition, "Tradition and Modernity in Hyogu (Mounting/Binding)."

Highlights & Experience

The most exciting part is the hands-on experience of traditional culture. Using a special original kit, you will assemble a mini 4-panel folding screen, gaining a deep understanding of how these structures are built. Once assembled, you will use authentic Nihonga tools and materials to paint summer-themed motifs onto your own mini screen. It is a luxurious way to spend time fostering your creativity while touching the delicate expressions of Japanese art.

Participation Details

This event requires advanced reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will close once capacity is reached. The workshop is led by Assistant Professor Yomogi Harada from the Faculty of Art at Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts, with technical support from assistant Kako Ushio. You will have the chance to use professional-grade Nihonga tools and materials under expert guidance.
