Event Overview

"Usuki Takeyoi" is a mystical festival held in the historic streets of Usuki, Oita Prefecture, where approximately 20,000 bamboo lanterns light up the night. The event is themed around the ancient "Hannya-hime Legend," blending light with local history. Recognized as part of the "Japan Nightscape Heritage," this is a signature autumn event in Usuki.

Bamboo Lanterns and Historic Streets

As you walk through the stone-paved paths and white-walled streets near Nioza, you will be surrounded by countless soft, warm lights. The entire town feels enchanted, making it a perfect spot for photography. Look out for the large-scale bamboo sculptures created by local groups, which feature new designs every year.

The Hannya-hime Procession

The centerpiece of the festival is the "Hannya-hime Procession." This reenactment tells the story of Princess Hannya, who passed away on her journey to the capital. The procession moves between Yasaka Shrine and the Inaba Family Residence, beautifully expressing the theme of a "homecoming" and allowing visitors to feel the depth of local history.

  • *Shuttle Bus**: In previous years, shuttles ran from Usuki General Sports Park and Usuki Sekibutsu. Please check for 2026 availability via official announcements.

Best Times to Visit

  • *For Photography**: The "Magic Hour" (around 17:00–18:00) when the sky is still a deep indigo is the most beautiful time for photos.
  • *For the Procession**: The peak excitement is between 18:30 and 20:30.
  • *For a Quiet Stroll**: After 20:30, the crowds thin out, allowing for a peaceful walk.

Traveling with Children

The venue features many stone paths and slopes, making strollers difficult to use. We recommend using a baby carrier. Also, please prepare for the cold, as November nights in Usuki can be quite chilly.
