The Tosa Ichijo Kuge Gyoretsu 'Fuji Matsuri' is a traditional festival recreating the historical moment in 1468 when the former Kanpaku, Ichijo Mochifusa, moved from Kyoto to the Nakamura region of Kochi. Modeلing the famous Aoi Matsuri of Kyoto, this event is characterized by its deep sense of Muromachi-period elegance. The festival serves to honor the history of the Ichijo family while expressing gratitude to the natural beauty of the Shimanto River and the legacy of the Tosa Ichijo clan.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the magnificent noble procession (Kuge Gyoretsu) featuring approximately 100 participants. As the procession moves from Ichijo Shrine through the city streets, you will see people dressed in vibrant, color-coded Muromachi-era attire, creating a living-history picture scroll. You can witness the faithful recreation of historical roles, including Ichijo Mochifusa, his granddaughter Tamahime, samurai, and young attendants.

Beyond the parade, you can enjoy various local traditional performing arts. This includes the powerful sounds of Ichijo Taiko drumming and the graceful Miko (shrine maiden) dances. The atmosphere is further enriched by modern stage performances and local food stalls, offering a wonderful blend of historical tradition and contemporary local energy.
