Takeda Natsukoshi Matsuri is a traditional event held in the historic castle town of Takeda, Oita Prefecture. The festival features the procession of the Shogen Hachiman Shrine portable shrine (mikoshi) through three local shrines: Shinmei-sha, Oka Jinja, and Nishinomiya-sha. While it once spanned several days, it is now concentrated into a single day of intense celebration. Visitors can witness the energetic spirit of the community, including children's portable shrines accompanied by the rhythmic shouts of "Chosaja!"
There are three main highlights to this festival: the Mikoshi procession, the Kagura dance, and the Night Market.
1. Mikoshi Procession: Watch the sacred portable shrine from Shogen Hachiman Shrine travel through the castle town. This deeply rooted local tradition brings the deity to the community from a distance of about 7km.
2. Shogen Kagura: Experience the traditional movements and rhythms of Shogen Kagura performed at the Johuku Machi Koryu Plaza. This is a rare chance to see local heritage up close.
3. Tanabata Children's Night Market: As evening approaches, the area transforms into a lively night market, adding a festive atmosphere to the end of the day.
