Event Overview

Takengei is a traditional performing art held every autumn at Wakamiya Inari Shrine in Nagasaki City. Originating from the Chinese-style 'Rakan Dance,' it depicts the playful movements of male and female foxes, the messengers of the shrine. This historic event has been cherished since the Edo period and is designated as a National Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

Highlights & What to Expect

The main attraction is the breathtaking acrobatics performed atop two green bamboo poles reaching approximately 10 meters high. Two performers wearing fox masks and white robes execute daring stunts—such as handstands and synchronized acrobatics—to the rhythmic sounds of flutes, drums, and shamisen. The high-stakes performance, sometimes performed without safety lines, creates an intense, heart-pounding atmosphere for the audience.

Other highlights include the festive scattering of lucky rice cakes by the female fox and a dramatic climax where the male fox releases a chicken into the air, ensuring a spectacle that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

• By Streetcar: Take the streetcar (bound for Hotarujaya) from Nagasaki Station for about 8 minutes. Get off at 'Shin-Daikomachi' station and walk for about 10 minutes.
• By Bus: Take a bus from JR Nagasaki Station for about 15 minutes. Get off at 'Shin-Daikomachi' and walk for about 10 minutes.

Essentials & Etiquette

The shrine is located in a hilly area. While the scenery is beautiful, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
