Event Overview

The Takayama Yabusame Festival is a traditional celebration centered around Yabusame (horseback archery) held around the Shijusho Shrine in Kimotsuki, Kagoshima. This event preserves the ancient art of Yabusame to honor the local history and culture. The festival offers a dynamic experience, featuring lively stage shows and local food stalls in the morning, followed by the solemn and prestigious Yabusame ritual in the afternoon.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Yabusame Hono' (Ritual Offering of Horseback Archery). Selected 2nd-year junior high school students, dressed in traditional hunting attire and straw hats, gallop across a 330m track to release nine arrows. These young archers undergo rigorous training for about 30 days to sharpen their focus and skill. The combination of tension and speed is truly breathtaking.

In the morning, the town comes alive with various stage shows and a samurai procession (Mushagyo) through the town center. You can also enjoy local flavors at food stalls and food trucks. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Japanese tradition amidst a vibrant, historical atmosphere.
