The Taiji Town Fireworks Festival and Taijiura Isana Matsuri is a major annual event held every August 14th in Taiji, Wakayama. Since 1987, this festival has been held to preserve and promote the history and culture of Taiji, a town famous as the birthplace of traditional whaling.
The event begins in the evening at the fishing port with the "Taijiura Isana Matsuri" (Whale Festival), followed by the "Taiji Town Fireworks Festival" at night. It is a unique celebration that blends local traditional rituals with a vibrant summer fireworks display.
The main highlight is the "Taijiura Isana Matsuri," which recreates traditional whaling culture. Using a massive 9-meter FRP whale model and traditional boats (Sekobune), the ritual reenacts the historical "amigake-tsuki-tori" (net-and-harpoon) whaling method. This powerful ceremony is a rare and significant moment representing the region's history.
From 8:00 PM, the "Taiji Town Fireworks Festival" begins, lighting up the seaside sky. After the fireworks, the festivities continue with a Bon Odori dance at the Fisheries Cooperative Plaza, allowing visitors to feel the lively spirit of the local community.
