Event Overview

Tado Matsuri is a significant annual ritual held on May 4 and 5 at Tado Taisha in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture. This historic festival dates back to the 14th century and is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Mie Prefecture. The festival has a dramatic history; it was once nearly lost due to attacks by Oda Nobunaga but was revived through the efforts of Honda Tadakatsu, one of the legendary Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa era.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight of Tado Matsuri is the "Ageuma Shinji." Young riders, dressed in traditional warrior attire like Jingasa Kamiri, guide horses as they charge up a steep, 2-meter high stone slope. The success of the horse's ascent is believed to predict the year's harvest, making this a high-tension, awe-inspiring spectacle.

On May 5, the festivities continue with the "Yabusame Shinji" (horseback archery). After the portable shrines (Mikoshi) are carried through the area, riders demonstrate incredible equestrian skills and precision. Set in a land famous for its white horse legends, watching the horses move with such power and grace is a truly unforgettable experience.

Schedule

The festival takes place over two days:

  • *May 4**: The Ageuma ritual is held, featuring 12 total ascents (2 per district).
  • *May 5**: The main ritual features 6 total ascents (1 per district). This is followed by the Mikoshi procession and the Yabusame (horseback archery) ceremony.

Venue and Access

The venue is Tado Taisha in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture.

  • *By Train**: Take the Kintetsu Nagoya Line from Nagoya Station to Kuwana Station, then transfer to the Yoro Railway to reach Tado Station. As the shrine is about 1.5km from the station, walking, a taxi, or a local community bus is recommended.
  • *By Car**: Approximately 10 mins from Kuwana Higashi IC, 15 mins from Yamato IC, or 20 mins from Wangan Kuwana IC. Private paid parking is available nearby.

Tips for Visitors

Tado Matsuri is a sacred Shinto ritual (Shinji) rather than just a tourist event. The Ageuma ritual is performed with great solemnity, with modern adjustments made to ensure both horse safety and tradition. Please observe the rituals with respect and avoid obstructing the movements of priests or worshippers.

What to Bring, Clothing, and Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: As this is an outdoor event, we recommend comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the May weather.
  • *Photography**: Personal photography is allowed, but commercial photography requires prior permission from Tado Taisha. Please be mindful not to block the view of other worshippers.
  • *Pets**: Pets are only permitted up to the San-no-Torii gate. They are not allowed near the main shrine building.
  • *Payment**: Please check local information regarding the purchase of amulets (Goshuin, etc.) or food and drink near the venue.
