Susuharai Shinji (Year-End Purification, Joya-sai, and New Year Rituals)

Event Overview

Tamaki Jinja hosts a series of sacred rituals from the end of the year to the beginning of the new year to celebrate the closing of one year and the birth of the next. These are not merely events, but essential ceremonies to purify the 'sins and impurities' accumulated in daily life, allowing visitors to welcome the new year with a pure heart. These rituals are part of the prestigious traditions associated with the 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range' World Heritage site.

Highlights & Experiences

The greatest charm of this period is the opportunity to feel the essence of Japanese spirituality. On December 31st, the 'Toshi goe no Oharae' (Year-End Purification) involves a ritual to transfer impurities to a figure, cleansing the mind and body. This is followed by the 'Joya-sai,' a solemn ceremony to mark the end of the year.

The highlight of the new year is the 'Shinshun Ichiban Daiko' (First Drum of the New Year). From New Year's Eve through midnight on January 1st, participants can strike the drum 108 times—one for each of the 108 worldly desires—to herald the arrival of the new year. The powerful resonance of the drum is a majestic sight and sound. Additionally, the first 108 participants may receive a special New Year's Ema (votive tablet). On January 1st at 7:00 AM, the 'Saitan-sai' is held to offer prayers for a fresh and prosperous year.

Schedule

The rituals proceed in stages from New Year's Eve to New Year's Day:

• *December 3 eventually (New Year's Eve)**
• Toshi goe no Oharae: From 3:00 PM
• Joya-sai: Immediately following the purification ritual
• *January 1 (New Year's Day)**
• Shinshun Ichiban Daiko: From 12:00 AM (Midnight)
• Saitan-sai: From 7:00 AM

Venue & Access

Tamaki Jinja is a sacred site located deep in the mountains of Nara Prefecture. While the environment is serene and beautiful, please plan your travel carefully.

Public transportation is extremely limited. We strongly recommend checking bus timetables in advance or arranging a car/taxi.

Participation Tips

Participants are asked to maintain silence and respect during the rituals. The 'Shinshun Ichiban Daiko' offers a rare opportunity to personally strike the drum and deeply understand the traditional Japanese form of prayer. Please note that special items like Ema are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is advised.

Clothing & Etiquette

Please observe the following guidelines:

• *Clothing**: The shrine is in a mountainous area and temperatures are extremely low during the New Year period. Please bring heavy coats, gloves, and heat packs (Kairo) for warmth.
• *Payment**: Most offerings (Saisen), amulets, and charms require **CASH**. Please carry sufficient Japanese Yen as credit cards and electronic money are generally not accepted.
• *Language Support**: English support and signage are very limited. We recommend using a translation app for assistance.
• *Reservations**: Please check the official website to see if any specific rituals require advance booking.
• *Manners**: These are sacred rituals. Please refrain from loud talking and respect the atmosphere. Follow local instructions regarding photography.
