Event Overview

The Suo Sose no Hashiramatsu Festival is a traditional ritual held in Sose, Shuto-cho, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, boasting a history of approximately 289 years. Originally held to pray for the safety of livestock, it was designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1989. The customs are carefully preserved across the Nakamura, Ochiai, and Yamada districts.

Highlights & What to Expect

The absolute highlight is the sight of torches being thrown one after another onto a massive 20-meter tall wooden structure, culminating in the intense, roaring flames at the very top. The brilliance of the fire against the dark night sky is truly overwhelming and beautiful. The dynamic display of light and fire following the sacred ritual is a truly spectacular spectacle.

Access is relatively smooth via car, located approximately 10 minutes from the Kuga IC on the Sanyo Expressway.
