Event Overview

Sumiyoshi Jinja Grand Festival is a traditional ritual held annually from July 14 to 16 at Sumiyoshi Jinja, the guardian shrine of Otaru. This significant event prays for local peace and prosperity, featuring high-energy Mikoshi (portable shrine) processions, historic Bugaku dances, and a bustling atmosphere filled with street food stalls. Visitors can experience precious cultural heritage, such as the 'Hyakkan Mikoshi' and the traditional 'Daidai Kagura' dance, which represents the mainstream of Kagura in Hokkaido.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the Mikoshi procession. There are two styles: a vehicle-based parade through the city (Main Body and Second Division) and a traditional carrying-style procession around the shrine area, filling the streets with intense energy. At the shrine grounds, you can watch sacred Bugaku dances like 'Karyobin' and 'Kocho,' or the 'Daidai Kagura' performance. During the festival, approximately 200 food stalls line the shrine and surrounding streets. Be sure to try local specialties like the famous 'Otaru Ankake Yakisoba' (stir-fried noodles with thick sauce).

July 16

• *08:30**: Mikoshi Procession Departure (From Temiya/Irooi area)
• *15:30**: Gathering of five Mikoshi at Tanaka Shuzo Kikkoko Store
• *16:30**: Arrival at Shrine & 'Kango-sai' Ceremony
• *After 17:00**: Fuku-mochi (Lucky rice cake) toss
