Shudan Yamakasa Mise
5 min readEvent Overview
Shudan Yamakasa Mise is a special program of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in Fukuoka. Since 1962, this event has transformed Meiji-dori into a grand stage where you can witness the powerful movement of ornate, heavy floats (Yamakasa). The designated route spans approximately 1.3km from the Gofukumachi intersection to the Tenjin area (near Fukuoka City Hall), allowing spectators to enjoy the intense energy of the floats during both the outbound and return journeys.
Highlights and Experience
The true thrill lies in seeing the massive floats navigate the urban landscape of Me-iji-dori. A unique feature of this day is the special "Daiagari" role, where a prominent figure rides atop the float to cheer on the carriers and coordinate the movements with the staff. The combination of traditional rhythmic chants and the sheer physical power of the carriers makes for a breathtaking spectacle. Because the floats travel the route twice, you have the chance to experience the dynamic energy from two different perspectives.

Tips for Visitors
This event captures the intense excitement leading up to the climax of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa. It is a unique experience to see a modern city street like Meiji-dori temporarily transform into a traditional festival stage. We recommend watching the floats during both the outbound and return legs to see the different expressions of the festival's energy.

As this is an outdoor street event, please wear comfortable clothing. Since you will be standing on the street, it is wise to bring water and sun protection to stay comfortable in the heat.
