Event Overview

Jotekaku Museum (within Shokoku-ji Temple) is hosting the second phase of its special exhibition, "Kyoto of Emperor Go-Mizunoo," to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the museum's opening. The theme explores the profound connection between Shokoku-ji—founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu during the Muromachi period—and Emperor Go-Mizunoo, who led the cultural movements of the early modern era. As the Emperor took tonsure under a monk of Shokoku-ji and rebuilt many temple structures, the temple holds many precious artifacts related to his legacy. This exhibition presents highly valuable treasures that reflect the brilliant culture of 17th-century Kyoto.

Highlights & What to Expect

The main attraction is the collection of rare artifacts symbolizing the history of Emperor Go-Mizunoo, Zen Buddhism, and Shokoku-ji. The exhibition is organized into several sections to provide a deep sense of historical weight. Of particular note are the Important Cultural Properties, such as the "Red Raku Tea Bowl" associated with Hon'ami Koetsu and the "Enameled Autumn Grass Folding Pattern Bowl" by Ogata Kenzan, which represent the pinnacle of tea ceremony culture. Visitors can also enjoy Zen calligraphy, items reflecting the temple's history as a family temple for the Imperial Court, and beautiful folding screens depicting the changing seasons.

The venue is the Jotekaku Museum located within Shokoku-ji Temple, Kita-ku, Kyoto.

• *From Kyoto Municipal Subway "Imadegawa Station":** Approx. 8-minute walk from Exit 3.
• *From Hankyu Railway "Karuma Station":** Transfer to Kyoto Subway and get off at "Imadegawa Station," then walk approx. 8 minutes.
• *From Keihan Railway "Demachiyanagi Station":** Approx. 20-minute walk or via City Bus.
• *Via City Bus:** 6-minute walk from "Doshisha-mae" stop, or 8-minute walk from "Karasuma Imadegawa" stop.
