Event Overview

Shonai Taisai is a significant historical ritual established in 1877 to celebrate the founding of Shonai Shrine. For nearly 149 years, it has preserved the tradition of the Edo-period 'Sankin-kotai' (alternate attendance) system. Approximately 400 local citizens dress as samurai, princesses, and armored warriors to parade through the streets. Set against the backdrop of Tsuruoka's historic streets, the event offers a beautiful, living picture of Japan's past.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main highlight is the 'Daimyo Procession' featuring 400 participants. Enjoy dynamic performances such as the 'Sanyaku-noburi' (spear throwing), the powerful sounds of the 'Gunpowder Unit' with muskets, and the elegant 'Women's Procession.' For the best view, head to the area in front of the City Hall for the 'Grand Unveiling,' where the procession pauses for high-impact performances.

After the procession, the 'Yone-sai' festival begins at Tsuruoka Park North Plaza. This is a lively celebration of sound and light featuring guest DJs, live bands, and various food trucks and stalls. It is a unique way to experience the transition from traditional history to modern music and food.

The event spans two days, but the main Daimyo Procession takes place only on October 6.

Venue & Access

The event takes place around Shonai Shrine, Tsuruoka Park, and the surrounding city areas.

  • *Access**: Take a bus for about 5 minutes from JR Tsuruoka Station, get off at 'Tsuruoka City Hall,' and walk for 1 minute. Alternatively, use the 'Shiyakusho-mae' bus stop.
  • *Parking**: No dedicated event parking is available. Please use nearby municipal parking lots (Park East, Central, West, South, or City Hall parking). Note that traffic restrictions occur from 14:30 to 16:30, so arrive early.

Tips for Visitors

For the most vivid experience, watch from the 'City Hall' area where the procession performs. You can also enjoy the historical costumes from various angles along the 2km route. For the 'Yone-sai' night event, come hungry to enjoy local gourmet food from the many food trucks.
