Guide
Shokoku-ji Akaten Kojo is a Zazen program held at Shokoku-ji, one of Kyoto's most prestigious temples (ranked second among the Kyoto Gozan/Five Mountains). This session offers a chance to practice Zazen—the foundation of Zen—to reflect on oneself and calm the mind. Just as the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Zazen is a traditional method for achieving spiritual awakening.
In the serene environment of the historic Shokoku-ji, you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in stillness. This is a precious opportunity to connect with your inner self through the teachings of Zen.
The program consists of Zazen practice followed by a Dharma talk. First, you will practice meditation by adjusting your posture and breathing in a quiet space. Afterward, a monk will deliver a Dharma talk to share Zen teachings and philosophies.
Concentrating on Zazen within the solemn atmosphere of Shokoku-ji—a site filled with historic architecture and gardens—allows you to release daily stress and find mental tranquility. The program is structured so that even beginners can easily experience the basics of Zen.
