Event Overview

The Hatsuogo Matsuri (Nakashinden Hibuse no Toramai) is a traditional event held in the Nakashinden district of Kami Town, Miyagi Prefecture, dating back to the Muromachi period. Historically, this region faced frequent fires caused by strong winds blowing from the Ou Mountains during spring and early summer. Based on the ancient wisdom that "clouds follow the dragon, and wind follows the tiger," the Tiger Dance (Toramai) was established to invoke the power of the tiger to calm the winds and prevent fires. For approximately 650 years, this ritual has been a vital part of the community, praying for fire prevention and family safety.

The main highlight is the breathtaking "Tiger Dance" (Toramai), which serves as the festival's climax. In front of the Karakoji Festival headquarters, several tigers atop high platforms perform powerful, rhythmic dances to the sound of traditional music. The sight of these tigers parading through the streets alongside colorful floats (dashi) is truly spectacular. You can feel the intense energy of the community's prayers for peace and safety while witnessing this historic performing art up close.

The venue is the Nakashinden Karakoji Shopping Street in Kami Town.

• Approximately 20 minutes from either the Furukawa IC or Yamato IC via the Tohoku Expressway.
• From JR Sendai Station West Exit Bus Pool, take the Miyako Bus (Kamo Express bound for Nakashinden) for about 70 minutes.
• From JR Furukawa Station (Tohoku Shinkansen), take the Miyako Bus (bound for Irimayaku-mae) for about 30 minutes and get off at Nakashinden Nishimachi.

As this is an outdoor event, please wear comfortable clothing. While approximately 600 parking spaces are available near the Kami Town Hall, traffic is expected to be heavy; using public transport is recommended.
