The Shizume Jinja Shrine Festival is a traditional summer event held in the historic Narai-juku post town in Shiojiri, Nagano. The festival's origins date back to 1618, established to appease a plague by inviting the deity from Katori Shrine. Today, it remains a vital cultural heritage celebrated amidst the beautifully preserved Edo-period streets.
The main attraction is the procession of young men dressed in formal 'kamishimo' attire. They march from Shizume Shrine toward the north of the post town, playing traditional music. As the parade passes, you may see local residents opening their windows to offer hospitality, creating a warm, communal atmosphere.
The festival is held annually on August 12. Preparations and the evening festivities (Yoimatsuri) take place on August 11. On the main day, the procession begins in the afternoon following the musical offerings at the shrine.
