Shitena-odori is a significant intangible folk cultural property passed down in Torihama, Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture. Originating in the mid-Edo period, this dance was once interrupted but was revived during the Taisho era and is still cherished today. It serves as a vital ritual to conclude the Atago Matsuri festival. It is a lively event where local history and community spirit blend seamlessly.
The main highlight is the dynamic sight of dancers forming multiple concentric circles around a central tower (yagura), dancing to the powerful beat of drums. Known as one of the most energetic dances due to its constant, expressive hand movements, the sheer vitality of the performance is captivating. While classical themes like "Suzuki Sukemasa" were once standard, the dance continues to evolve by incorporating modern themes, keeping the tradition alive.
