Shiroyama Jizo Matsuri is a cherished traditional ritual held to honor the Shiroyama Jizo deity, who is believed to protect the local community. The festival takes place in the Otemachi area, a district characterized by its beautifully preserved historic houses. During this special event, the entire neighborhood undergoes a magical transformation into a glowing landscape of light.
The true highlight of this festival is the stunning display of light. Countless traditional lanterns (chochin) are hung from the eaves of old houses, and traditional paper lamps (andon) decorate the streets. As the lights flicker on, the narrow, historic alleys are transformed into a dreamlike, nostalgic space. It is a perfect opportunity to witness the harmony between ancient architecture and warm, inviting light.
The festival is held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The main festivities and the most vibrant atmosphere occur during the night, specifically from 20:00 to 22:30. Watching the town slowly become enveloped in the soft glow of lanterns as evening falls is the quintessential experience of this event.
The event takes place throughout the area surrounding the historic houses of Otemachi. Because the festival is held along narrow, traditional streets, we recommend exploring the area on foot to fully soak in the unique atmosphere and local topography.
