Shinshu Ueda Dai Hanabi Taikai (Great Fireworks Festival)
7 min readEvent Overview
The Shinshu Ueda Dai Hanaki Taikai is a premier fireworks festival held along the banks of the Chikuma River in Ueda City, Nagano. The 2026 edition is particularly special, marking the 39th anniversary and celebrating the 130th anniversary of the Ueda Chamber of Commerce. Due to the unique geography of the Ueda Basin, the sounds and vibrations of the fireworks echo off the surrounding mountains, offering a powerful 'sensory' experience where you can feel the music and explosions in your very soul.
Highlights & How to Enjoy
The main draw is the 'competition' style performance by three top-tier pyrotechnic companies from Nagano. Watch as massive shells fill the night sky, complemented by 'Music Star Mines' that are perfectly synchronized with music to create a stunning audiovisual spectacle. The reflection of the lights on the surface of the Chikuma River adds a magical touch to the night. You can also enjoy a lively atmosphere with numerous food stalls and food trucks serving local delicacies along the riverbank.

- *Shinano Railway**: Approx. 30 minutes to Ueda Station (from Nagano City or Karuizawa area)

By Car
Approximately 15 minutes from the Joshin-etsu Expressway (Ueda Sugadaira IC) via Route 144. Please note that there is NO dedicated parking for the event. Parking near Ueda Station is limited and fills up very early; we highly recommend using public transportation or utilizing a 'park and ride' strategy at a nearby station.
Pro-Tips for Visitors
To enjoy the festival without the stress, arrive around 17:00–18:00 to secure a good spot and enjoy the food stalls before the peak rush. Since train stations become extremely crowded after the show, please charge your transit IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo) in advance. We also strongly recommend deciding on a meeting point with your group before the fireworks end, as mobile networks often become unreliable due to the high volume of users.
