Event Overview

The Shimonoseki Kaikyo Marathon is a popular running event held in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This race allows you to fully experience the charm of Shimonoseki, the westernmost major city on Honshu, which is surrounded by two distinct bodies of water: the Seto Inland Sea (Suo-nada) and the Sea of Japan (Hibiki-nada). Since its first edition in 2008, this event has been held every November, featuring one of Japan's most beautiful seaside courses that winds through stunning coastlines and historical landmarks.

Highlights & Enjoyment

The biggest draw is undoubtedly the spectacular scenery. The course offers breathtaking views of the Kanmon Straits in the first half and the vast Hibiki-nada sea in the second half, ensuring a beautiful ocean backdrop throughout your run. Additionally, the route passes near iconic Shimonoseki landmarks such as Akama Shrine, Dan-no-ura, and the Karato Market, allowing you to combine your passion for running with local sightseeing. For the full marathon, timing is recorded every 5km, so you can keep track of your progress with a personal record.

  • *By Train**: Approximately a 7-minute walk from JR Shimonoseki Station on the Sanyo Main Line.
  • *By Car**: Approximately 15 minutes from the Shimonoseki IC on the Chugoku Expressway.

Participation Tips

This event has a capacity limit and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the second half of the course includes four sections with elevation changes of 40m to 50m near the Hikoshima Bridge. While the views are incredible, runners are advised to manage their pace carefully due to these inclines.

What to Bring & Preparation

The course is well-equipped with 15 water stations and 7 medical stations. On the day of the event, please wear comfortable athletic clothing and prepare for changing weather or temperatures.
