The Shimogamo Shrine Meigetsu Kangen-sai is a traditional festival originating from the ancient 'Mitoshiro-e' rituals of the Heian period. Held to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon (Jugoya), it has long been a time to pray for bountiful harvests and peace. Since 1963, the event has been open to the public, offering a rare opportunity to experience Japan's profound moon-viewing culture set against the stunning, historic backdrop of the Shimogamo Shrine World Heritage site.
