Shakyo (the practice of transcribing Buddhist scriptures) will be held at Fukuchizan Shuzen-ji Temple in Izu City, Shizuoka. Shuzen-ji is the birthplace of Shuzen-ji Onsen and was founded in 807 (the second year of the Daido era) by Kobo Daishi. This historic temple has a long lineage, including patronage by the Hojo clan during the Kamakura period. In this event, you will practice transcribing Buddhist sutras within the serene and tranquil environment of the temple grounds.
The main activity is Shakyo, where you will carefully transcribe Buddhist teachings one character at a time using a brush or brush pen. Shuzen-ji also features the Zuiho-zo Treasure Hall, which houses precious items such as the golden Dokko-sho (ritual implement) associated with Kukai and the Song-dynasty sutra donated by Hojo Masako. You can experience traditional Japanese culture through the meditative act of writing, surrounded by lush nature and traditional architecture, providing a peaceful escape from daily life.
