Migishi Setsuko Exhibition: 120th Anniversary of Her Birth
3 min readEvent Overview
Known as "the painter of passion," Migishi Setsuko (1905-1999) continued painting through her husband Kotaro's early death and the war, becoming widely recognized after the war as a leading Western-style painter. She moved to France in 1954, later basing herself in Cagnes in southern France and Véron in Burgundy, where she perfected her unique landscapes. After returning to Japan in 1989, she painted prolifically in her Oiso studio until her death at 94.
This exhibition, supervised by an art historian and former head of the curatorial division at Nagoya City Art Museum, traces Setsuko's lifelong artistic journey with about 70 works, including masterpieces and first-time exhibits.
