Sakudansai Ritual

Event Overview

Sakudansai is a significant Shinto ritual held on the 1st of every month at Kehi Jingū, the guardian shrine of the Hokuriku region located in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture. Kehi Jingū is a prestigious shrine where many deities were enshrined by imperial decree, and is affectionately known by locals as 'Keisan.' The ritual is held to purify the mind and body, marking a fresh start for the new month.

Highlights & Experience

The essence of this event is the solemn atmosphere of the Shinto ritual performed amidst the historic shrine architecture. Kehi Jingū is designated as part of the 'Oku no Hosomichi Scenic Beauty' area. The grounds are dotted with spiritual power spots, including the grand Torii gate and the legendary 'Chomeisui' (Long-Life Water) with over 1,300 years of history. During Sakudansai, you can pray for a successful month ahead while soaking in the sacred air. It is also a wonderful time to witness the beautiful scenery of the 'Moon over Kehi Jingū,' which is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 moon-viewing spots.

Venue & Access

The event takes place at Kehi Jingū in Tsuruga, Fukui.

Approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Tsuruga Station, or a 5-minute ride via community bus from the station (get off at 'Kehi Jingū-mae' stop).

Approximately 10 minutes from the Tsuruga IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. Free parking is available for about 100 vehicles.

Participation Tips

No prior reservation is required to visit for Sakudansai. You can experience the sacred atmosphere while strolling through the shrine grounds. Since the area features many historical cultural assets and the famous 'Chomeisui' water, we recommend exploring the entire shrine grounds before or after the ritual.

Etiquette & Information

• *Dress Code**: Please wear neat, modest clothing suitable for visiting a shrine.
• *Amulets & Goshuin (Stamps)**: Amulets and Goshuin are available from 8:45 AM to 4:45 PM.
• *Prayers (Kito)**: For personal prayers (such as protection from bad luck or family safety), fees start from 6,000 JPY. Please bring your offering in a 'Noshi' envelope and present it directly to the shrine office.
• *Etiquette**: As the shrine grounds are a sacred space, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. For more details, please check the official website.
