Event Overview

The Sakei Jizo Festival is a traditional event held every August 23rd and 24th in the Sakei district of Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture. The festival celebrates the Sakei Jizo-son, one of the most significant stone Jizo statues in Shiga. While the area historically featured float processions during the Jizo-bon season, today the tradition continues through the display of 'Tsukurimono'—unique, handmade decorative crafts that reflect the trends and creativity of each era, preserving the local culture and history.

The main attraction is the exhibition of 'Tsukurimono,' ingenious handmade crafts created by local residents. These creative displays are a true testament to the community's ingenuity and are a delight to behold. As night falls, the atmosphere becomes truly magical with the 'Manto Nagashi' (lantern floating) ceremony on the Jizo River. Additionally, during this period, the beautiful 'Baika-mo' (water milfoil) blooming in the clear stream is illuminated, creating a serene and cooling summer nightscape alongside traditional Bon Odori dancing and folk songs.

The event is held around the Nakasendo Sakei-shuku and Jizo River area in Sakei, Maibara City, Shiga.

  • *By Car**: About 5 minutes from the Maibara IC via Route 21 toward Sekigahara. Please avoid driving directly to the Jizo River area; instead, please use the parking available near JR Sakei Station.

During the festival, you can enjoy food and drinks from local stalls while soaking in the traditional atmosphere. The 'Manto Nagashi' (lantern floating) is a particularly moving experience, as the lights drifting on the water surface create a beautiful, emotional scene. You can also experience local craftsmanship through nearby events like the 'Maibara Handiwork Exhibition ~En~'.
