Event Overview

The Saio Matsuri is a historic festival held in Meiwa, Mie Prefecture. The highlight is the 'Saio-gunko' procession, which recreates the journey of the 'Saio'—an unmarried woman who once served at the Ise Grand Shrine—as she traveled from the capital to the Saiku palace. The parade features participants dressed in exquisite, historically accurate Heian-period costumes, bringing ancient history to life. The absolute highlight is the 'Saio-gunko' procession. The festival takes place over two days. Please note that the event may be canceled in the event of rain.

• 15:00–21:00: Saio Market (Local specialty sales, etc.)
• 17:00–: Eve Festival (Children's procession and performer introductions)
• 10:00–15:00: Saio Market and various attractions
• 13:00–: Purification Ritual & Saio-gunko (Route: Saiku Heian-no-Mori → Kamizono Grass Field → Saiku Historical Museum)

Venue & Access

The festival is held around the Saiku Heian-no-Mori area in Meiwa, Mie.

Access: The venue is located near Kintetsu Saiku Station. Since crowds are expected, using public transportation is highly recommended.

Tips for Visitors

The Saio Matsuri is more than just a parade; it is a full-scale cultural experience. The route from 'Saiku Heian-no-Mori' to the 'Saiku Historical Museum' offers beautiful scenery and is an excellent spot for photography. We recommend arriving early to secure a good viewing spot before the procession begins.
