Event Overview

The Sai-agari Shinji is a traditional ritual based on the legend of Michitsugu Kono, the founder of Hikoshima. The name is said to derive from the phrase "Sa-a agarasase tamae" (Please raise it up). This ritual is a designated intangible cultural property of Shimonoseki, deeply tied to the local history.

Highlights

The main attraction is two beautiful dances that express the legend. First, children in traditional clothing perform a dance mimicking fish leaping from the sea. This is followed by a powerful performance of warriors in full armor (yoroi-kabuto) reenacting the discovery and raising of the sacred object from the sea.
