Guide
Sadowara Natsu Matsuri is a major summer event held in the Sadowara area of Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The festival takes place over two days in conjunction with the Atago Shrine summer festivities. The highlight of the event is the 'Danjiri' (large ceremonial floats/taiko floats). The energy of the festival spreads throughout the area, centered around the pedestrianized Ueda-jima Honmachi Street.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the 'Danjiri.' These massive, majestic floats possess an overwhelming presence that captivates all onlookers. As Ueda-jima Honmachi Street becomes a pedestrian-only zone, the sight of locals and visitors celebrating together perfectly captures the essence of a traditional Japanese summer. You can truly feel the vitality of Miyazaki through the intense heat and excitement of the parade.
The festival will be held over two days from July 18 (Sat) to July 19 (Sun), 2026. Please check the official details closer to the event date, as specific program timings are finalized near the event time.
The main area is centered around Ueda-jima Honmachi Street in Sadowara, Miyazaki City. During the festival, nearby roads will be closed to vehicles to create a pedestrian-only zone, and traffic regulations will be in place. It is recommended to use public transportation or walk from the nearest station to reach the venue.
The central festival area becomes very crowded due to the pedestrian-only streets. To get a close view of the powerful Danjiri floats, it is wise to secure a spot early and prepare for heavy crowds. Additionally, don't forget to try local delicacies like 'Kujira Yokan' (a famous local sweet) from long-standing shops nearby to complete your festival experience.
Many food stalls and local shops around the venue primarily accept cash. Please prepare small change or 1,000 yen notes for smooth transactions.
English support from event staff may be limited. Since most communication is in Japanese, having a translation app ready on your phone is highly recommended.
No prior reservation is required to participate in the festival.
As this is a summer event, heatstroke prevention is crucial. Wear breathable clothing and bring a hat and plenty of water/drinks. Since you will be walking through crowds, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
