Event Overview

The Ryoma Dappan Marathon is a unique historical running event held in Yusuhara, Kochi Prefecture—a town famously known as the place where the legendary samurai of the Meiji Restoration once embarked on their journeys. As you run, you can feel the spirit of history while being surrounded by the lush, vibrant nature of the region. The event offers three distinct distances to suit your skill level: a full marathon, a half marathon, and a 10km course. Whether you are a seasoned runner or a casual jogger, this is a chance to experience the very paths that shaped modern Japan.

Highlights & Experience

The greatest draw of this event is the chance to physically trace the footsteps of the historical figures who shaped the nation. Yusuhara is deeply connected to the legacy of Sakamoto Ryoma and other influential leaders of the Bakumatsu period. Running through this landscape allows you to feel the weight of history in every stride. Beyond the history, the scenic beauty of the surrounding mountains and forests provides a stunning backdrop that changes with the seasons. The sense of accomplishment after crossing the finish line, paired with the breathtaking views of Yusuhara, makes this a truly premium experience for any runner.

Tips for Participants

This is a highly unique event that combines historical-themed running with natural beauty. With distances ranging from 10km to a full marathon, it is suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced athletes. Before or after the race, we recommend visiting local landmarks such as the 'Library in the Clouds' (designed by Kengo Kuma) or the 'Six Samurai Graves' to deepen your connection to the area's history. Having a sense of purpose—running through a historic stage—will make your experience much more profound.

What to Bring & Etiquette

Please wear comfortable athletic clothing and running shoes. Since weather in the mountains can change quickly, we recommend bringing lightweight layers or a rain jacket.
