Otaru Ushio Matsuri is a historic summer festival beloved in Otaru, Hokkaido. Its origins date back to the 1958 Hokkaido Expo, designed to promote local commerce and tourism. The festival evolved from the 'Minato Otaru Commerce and Tourism Festival' and other local events, blending the maritime history of Otaru with vibrant community celebrations.
The highlight of the festival is the 'Music Fireworks' display. Approximately 5,000 shells are launched in synchronization with music, creating a breathtaking light and sound show. The paid viewing areas offer an exceptional vantage point to see the fireworks reflecting off the ocean surface. The entire city of Otaru comes alive with energy, allowing visitors to experience the local traditions and culture firsthand.
The 2026 festival is scheduled for 3 days from July 24 to July 26, 2026. Based on previous years (e.g., 2025), the fireworks typically launch around 20:00–20:30. Please check the official website closer to the date for the detailed 2026 program. If you plan to use a paid viewing area, please check the opening and closing times in advance.
The main festivities take place around the port areas of Otaru. The paid viewing area is located near Minato-cho 3-ban, Otaru. Since the venue is right by the sea, the scenery is beautiful, but please stay alert to local traffic regulations and crowd-control information released near the event date.
To enjoy the festival comfortably, please note that the paid viewing area uses a free-seating system. While approximately 1 square meter of space is allocated per person, you must bring your own mats or chairs. As the venue is near the water, security guards will be stationed near the embankments for safety. Please follow all rules and do not approach the water's edge.
