Event Overview

The Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival is a traditional summer event held from late July to early August in Onomichi, Hiroshima. Locally known as "Sumiyossan," the festival is famous for its stunning use of the natural landscape, where the sea and mountains create a natural amphitheater. With approximately 13,000 fireworks launched, the night sky is brilliantly illuminated. Since 2007, the festival has featured a spectacular "musical fireworks" finale, where the lights are perfectly synchronized with music for a truly moving experience.

The greatest charm of this event is the mystical scenery created by the harmony of the sea, mountains, and the charming townscape. The fireworks are launched over the sea near Onomichi Port, making the reflection on the water surface incredibly beautiful. Because the surrounding mountains reflect the sound, the auditory impact is exceptionally powerful. Standing along the coast, you can feel the vibration of the large blossoms and the rhythm of the music. The synchronized musical fireworks offer an artistic experience unlike any other.

Schedule

The festival is held annually on July 25th. The fireworks are scheduled to be launched from 19:30 to 20:30. Please note that the schedule may change depending on weather conditions; always check the official website for the latest updates on the day. In the event of severe weather, the festival will be canceled and there is no provision for postponement.

Venue & Access

The venue is the area around Sumiyoshi Shrine, near Do-do 2-chome, Onomichi. It is very convenient to access, being about a 10-minute walk from JR Onomichi Station, but please expect heavy crowds.

• *Public Transportation**: We highly recommend using public transport. The area around the station becomes extremely crowded, so please allow plenty of time for your journey.
• *By Car**: Large-scale traffic restrictions will be in place, and many roads will be closed. Finding parking near the venue is extremely difficult, so we strongly suggest using public transport or parking further away and walking.

To ensure you have the best experience, please consider the following:

• *Paid Seating**: If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy an unobstructed view, consider purchasing paid spectator seats. Options range from front-row seats for maximum impact to budget-friendly selections.
• *Daytime Sightseeing**: Use the time before the fireworks to explore the beautiful streets of Onomichi. Enjoy a bowl of local Onomichi Ramen or take in the views from Senko-ji Temple to fully soak in the summer atmosphere.
• *Finding a View**: If you wish to avoid the main crowds, look for open areas like the embankments or elevated parks. However, please be careful to stay within legal boundaries and avoid restricted areas.

• *Heat Protection**: It can be very humid and hot. Please bring plenty of water, a portable fan, a hand fan, cooling sheets, or cooling towels.
