Okunoin Manto-e
5 min readEvent Overview
Okunoin Manto-e is a sacred ritual held at the Okunoin area of Koyasan, where a vast number of donated lanterns are lit to offer prayers and blessings. This ceremony is a profound moment of spiritual reflection, where each light represents a prayer or a wish. As night falls over this UNESCO World Heritage site, the sacred landscape is transformed by a warm, ethereal glow.
Highlights & Experience
The most striking sight is the sea of countless lanterns illuminating the Okunoin area, creating a landscape of light that feels truly otherworldly. The sight of flickering flames against the dark night offers a sense of peace and deep spiritual connection. It is a rare opportunity to step away from the modern world and immerse yourself in the profound history and deep-rooted faith of Koyasan amidst the crisp autumn air.
Schedule
The event will be held from October 1 to October 3, 2026. The illumination takes place from 19:00 to 21:00. Please note that because this is a nighttime event, the surrounding areas will be very dark. It is a perfect time for quiet reflection to end your day.
Venue & Access
The venue is the Toro-do (Lantern Hall) at Okunoin, Koyasan, located in Koyasan, Wakayama.
[Access Details]
Take the Nankai Electric Railway to Gokurakubashi Station, then transfer to the cable car to reach Koyasan Station. From there, take a bus to the Okunoin-mae stop. The venue is approximately a 15-minute walk from the bus stop. Please be careful when walking as it will be dark at night.
Visitor Tips
This is a solemn and quiet ritual. Visitors are asked to maintain a respectful silence to preserve the sacred atmosphere. Since the event takes place at night, the paths can be quite dark. While a small flashlight or phone light can help you see your way, please use it discreetly to avoid disturbing the serene environment.
What to Bring & Etiquette
As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please prepare for the cold. Temperatures in Koyasan can drop significantly at night, so we highly recommend bringing warm clothing. Additionally, wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for uneven, dark paths. For the latest information on reservations or event changes, please check the official website.
