Nagoshi no Oharae is a traditional Shinto ritual held at Yoshino Jingu in Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture. The purpose of this ceremony is to purify the impurities and sins accumulated over the past six months by transferring them to a paper figure (hitogata). Participants pass through a 'Chinowa' (a ring made of lush cogongrass) to pray for good health, the prevention of misfortune, and protection from epidemics.
The ritual also invokes the indomitable spirit of the shrine's deity, Emperor Go-Daigo, to pray for the strength to overcome hardships and illness. It is a precious opportunity to experience traditional Japanese spirituality set against the historic landscapes of the ancient capital, Nara.
