Event Overview

The Minowa Castle Festival is a historical-themed event held at the ruins of Minowa Castle, one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles located in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. Built approximately 500 years ago by the Nagano clan, these ruins preserve the legacy of the intense battles of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Local residents dress in traditional samurai armor and period-appropriate clothing to bring history to life. Through the samurai procession, the memorial service, and the main highlight—the 'Minowa Castle Battle'—you can experience the vibrant culture of Japan's warring era.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The biggest highlight is the 'Minowa Castle Battle' held within the beautiful, tree-lined castle grounds. Samurai dressed as the forces of Nagano and Takeda engage in a high-energy battle in authentic armor, creating an immersive atmosphere that transports spectators back to the Sengoku period. You can also witness the 'Samurai Procession' as it moves from the castle town toward the castle, unfolding like a living historical scroll. Against the backdrop of the stone walls and earthen ramparts of this historic site, you will feel the presence of the ancient warriors. This experience amidst nature offers a unique way to connect with Japanese history.

Venue & Access

The venue is the Minowa Castle Ruins in Migosho-cho, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture.

Access via Public Transportation

Access from JR Takasaki Station is convenient:

  • *From JR Takasaki Station**: Take the Gunma Bus (bound for Migosho) from Platform 2 at the West Exit (approx. 30 mins). Get off at 'Migosho Honcho' and walk for about 20 minutes.
  • *Alternative Bus Route**: Take a bus bound for Ikaho Onsen, get off at 'Shiroyama Iriguchi' or 'Tomeya', and walk for about 15 minutes.

Parking & Shuttle Bus Information

Temporary parking lots are available at the following locations on the day of the event:

  • Takasaki City Migosho Branch Office
  • Fureai Park
  • Takasaki Municipal Minowa Elementary School

A free shuttle bus will run between these parking lots and Minowa Castle from 09:00 to 15:00.

Tips for Visitors

To fully enjoy the atmosphere, we recommend moving along with the procession. The 'Battle' scene is particularly exciting, so it is best to secure a good viewing spot early. As the castle ruins are surrounded by nature, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Please check the official website for any updates regarding payments or reservations.
