Event Overview

The Mikuni Fireworks Festival is one of the largest and most prestigious fireworks displays in the Hokuriku region, held annually in Mikuni, Fukui Prefecture. Centered around the stunning Mikuni Sunset Beach, the event features approximately 15,000 fireworks illuminating the beautiful Sea of Japan. The 44th edition is scheduled for August 11, 2026 (Tuesday/Public Holiday). It is a grand spectacle where the night sky and the ocean surface are painted with light simultaneously.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the rare "underwater fireworks" (suichu hanabi). Fireworks are launched from boats into the sea, creating a mesmerizing semi-circle of light that appears to rise directly from the water's surface. You will also see high-altitude star mines and rapid-fire sequences that keep the energy high. From the wide sandy shores of Mikuni Sunset Beach, you can enjoy an unobstructed, front-row view of the massive display accompanied by the soothing sound of the waves.

The main viewing areas are Mikuni Sunset Beach and Kuzuryu River Boat Park.

*By Train**: The nearest station is Mikuni-Minato Station on the Echizen Railway. Taking the train is the most reliable way to avoid heavy traffic.
*Shuttle Bus**: Temporary shuttle buses are expected to run between JR Awara-Onsen Station and the venue (previous rates were approximately 300 JPY one way).
*By Car**: Several free parking lots will be available, but they fill up very quickly. It is highly recommended to arrive in the early afternoon to secure a spot.

Pro-Tips for Visitors

For the best experience, we recommend booking paid viewing seats. These are available at the main Mikuni Sunset Beach and the more relaxed Kuzuryu River Boat Park. Please be aware that traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue from approximately 16:00 to 22:00. Because the roads become extremely congested after the fireworks, many travelers find it much smoother to stay at a nearby hot spring (onsen) ryokan and travel the next morning.

Essentials & Etiquette

*Payment**: Most food stalls (yatai) are **cash only**. Please carry plenty of small change and 1,000 JPY notes for smooth transactions.
*Clothing**: As this is a summer beach event, wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes suitable for the sand.
*Reservations**: If you wish to use paid viewing seats, you must purchase tickets in advance (Sales for 2026 begin on May 30).
