The Mikawa Isshiki Lantern Festival is a traditional event held at Suwa Shrine in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, boasting a history of over 450 years. Originating in the early Edo period as a ritual to ward off evil spirits from the sea, the festival has evolved into a stunning tradition of displaying massive paper lanterns. This event is highly regarded as a significant cultural asset of Aichi Prefecture.
The main attraction is the sheer scale of the 'Giant Lanterns.' Twelve massive lanterns, each measuring 10 meters in height and 5.6 meters in diameter, are displayed throughout the shrine. These lanterns feature intricate illustrations of Japanese mythology and historical scenes. As night falls, the warm glow from the internal candles illuminates the bamboo frames and paper, creating a mystical atmosphere of flickering light and ancient stories that captivates all who visit.
The festival is scheduled for August 26, 2026. The most magical moment occurs after 7:00 PM, when the lanterns are fully lit. To experience the full enchantment of the dancing lights against the summer night, we recommend arriving in the early evening.
