Mikage Matsuri is a highly significant Shinto ritual held at the historic Shimogamo-jinja (Kamo-mioya Jinja), a designated Important Cultural Property in Kyoto. This ceremony takes place prior to the famous Aoi Matsuri on May 15th. The ritual aims to facilitate the rebirth of the deity by bringing the 'Ara-mitama' (the vigorous, wild spirit) from Mikage-jinja to Shimogamo-jinja. With a history dating back to the mythical era around 581 BC, this is a prestigious ceremony that preserves the forms of Japan's oldest divine processions.

When traveling from Eizan Railway 'Yase-Hieizanguchi Station,' a common route is to walk straight from the station, turn right at a major road, and cross the bridge toward the cable car station. However, as the route can be complex, we recommend checking detailed maps or official information in advance.

Tips for Visitors

To fully enjoy Mikage Matsuri, it is important to understand the movement route. If you plan to visit the entire course from Shimogamo-jinja to Mikage-jinja and Aka-no-miya Jinja and back in one day, please be mindful of travel time. If you wish to see the 'Kiriba Shinji' at Shimogamo-jinja up close, plan your movement according to the afternoon schedule.
