Event Overview

The Meoto Iwa Grand Shimenawa Ceremony is a traditional ritual held at Futami Okitama Shrine in Ise, Mie Prefecture. This sacred ceremony involves the replacement of the massive Shimenawa (sacred straw rope) that connects the iconic Meoto Iwa rocks. The ritual takes place three times a year (May 5, September 5, and in December). It is a powerful and solemn event where local community members replace the rope, which serves as a sacred torii gate to honor the deities of the shrine.

The main attraction is the replacement of the 'Grand Shimenawa,' a colossal rope weighing approximately 40kg and stretching 35 meters in length. Venue and Access

The event is held at the area surrounding Futami Okitama Shrine and Meoto Iwa in Ise, Mie Prefecture.

  • *From JR/Kintetsu Ise-shi Station**: Take a bus heading toward Toba from the JR side of Ise-shi Station (approx. 25 mins). Get off at 'Meoto Iwa Higashiguchi' and walk for about 5 minutes.
  • *From JR Futamiura Station**: A 15-minute walk.
