Event Overview

Manto-e is a sacred Obon memorial service held annually on August 15th at the Ushiku Daibutsu. As darkness falls, the atmosphere becomes truly mystical, blending the soft glow of thousands of lanterns with a vibrant fireworks display. This event is a deeply meaningful way to experience the spiritual essence of the Japanese Obon season.

Highlights & What to Expect

The most captivating moment is the 'Bunto-no-gi' (Ritual of Lighting) followed by the 'Manto Procession.' Watch as the night comes alive with light. The event reaches its peak with the 'Dedication Fireworks' and the grand 'Main Fireworks' display. You will see large lanterns placed at the feet of the Great Buddha, adorned with prayer slips, creating a solemn and beautiful scene.

Schedule

The event takes place on August 15th. Please follow the schedule below:

  • 17:30: Gates Open (Free entry to the grounds)
  • 19:00: Bunto-no-gi (Ritual of Lighting) & Manto Procession
  • After 19:00: Dedication Fireworks begin
  • 19:30: Obon Memorial Service & Dharma Talk
  • 20:00: Main Fireworks Display
  • 20:30: Gates Close

Venue & Access

The venue is Ushiku Daibutsu.

Expect heavy traffic on the grounds and surrounding roads. If you are driving, please allow plenty of extra time for travel and parking.

Important Notes

Manto-e is held rain or shine (including light rain). However, please note that the program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather. Fireworks may also be suspended due to weather conditions.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is a nighttime outdoor event, we recommend bringing clothing suitable for the evening cool. Please check the official website for rules regarding prohibited items and policies for luggage or pets.
