Event Overview

The Kushikusha Autumn Festival (Kebesu Matsuri), held at Kushikusha Shrine in Kunisaki, Oita Prefecture, is a highly significant traditional event designated as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property. This historic festival has been passed down through generations, serving as a vital symbol of the local community's faith and culture. Held during the deepening autumn season, the ceremony offers a profound opportunity to experience the solemnity of Japanese spiritual culture in a truly sacred atmosphere.

Highlights and Experience

The main highlight of this festival is its status as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Rather than a simple local event, it is a precious opportunity to witness rituals that hold immense historical value to Japan. As the solemn ceremonies unfold, you will feel the weight of the traditions that local communities have protected for centuries. Through these rituals, you can experience the true essence and spirituality of traditional Japanese festivals.

Schedule

The festival is scheduled to take place on October 14, 2026. The ceremony is expected to run from approximately 18:30 to 21:00. Because it is held at night, the rituals are performed in a quiet, dark setting, creating a uniquely solemn and mystical atmosphere. Please note that the specific timing of the proceedings may change depending on the situation on the day of the event.

Venue and Access

The venue is Kushikusha Shrine, located in Kunisaki, Oita Prefecture. Access requires a combination of public transportation and driving. The nearest major station is JR Kitsuki Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, but it takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes by car to reach the shrine from there. If using public transport, take a bus bound for Kunisaki from JR Kitsuki Station, then transfer to a bus bound for Imi and get off at the Koie stop. As travel by public transport can be time-consuming, we recommend planning your journey well in advance.

Tips for Visitors

As this festival is held at night, the surroundings will be dark. To enjoy the traditional rituals peacefully, please be mindful of your surroundings and maintain a respectful presence. Since this is a significant cultural property, it is important to observe the ceremonies quietly without disrupting the proceedings. Showing respect for the local culture will lead to a much deeper and more meaningful experience.

What to Bring and Etiquette

As this is an outdoor event held at night, please prepare clothing suitable for temperature changes. Since it can get quite chilly in mid-October during the night, we strongly recommend bringing a warm jacket or outer layer. For specific information regarding payments or reservations, please check the latest updates from the local area or official sources. Please observe proper etiquette and respect the sacred nature of the ritual site.
