Hiking the Kurumayama Watershed
7 min readEvent Overview
Experience the dynamic landscape of the Kurumayama Highlands with the "Hiking the Kurumayama Watershed" guided tour. At an altitude of 1,925m, the summit area of Mt. Kuruma offers a breathtaking landscape where the sky and earth seem to merge. On this tour, you will walk along the central watershed, experiencing the precise boundary where rainwater splits its path toward either the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Japan. This is a special program designed to help you feel the raw energy of nature and refresh both mind and body.
Highlights and Experience
The greatest draw is the 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, you can enjoy an overwhelming sense of openness with views of Mt. Tateshina, the Yatsugatake Mountains, the Southern, Northern, and Central Alps, and even the Asama mountain range. During the autumn season, you can enjoy strolling through colorful alpine plants while feeling the crisp mountain breeze. Depending on the weather and time of day, you may even encounter a mystical "sea of clouds" (unkai) spreading before your eyes. Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and spend a luxurious time listening to the chirping of birds and the sound of the wind.
Schedule
This event will be held on October 11, 2026 (Sunday).
Please gather in front of the Kurumayama Highland Base Lift station at 9:00 AM. We recommend arriving early to ensure you are on time. Please note that the hiking route and detailed time schedule may change depending on the weather and local conditions, so we recommend checking for the latest updates on the day.
Venue and Access
The event takes place in the Kurumayama Highlands, Nagano Prefecture. The meeting point is "In front of the Kurumayama Highland Base Lift station." The most common way to reach the area is via the scenic Venus Line driving route. To reach the summit, you will use a mountain lift system. You will need to transfer between two lifts, which takes approximately 25 minutes one way (about 50 minutes round trip). Please plan your time carefully to allow for the lift ride and hiking preparations.
Participation Tips
This tour is designed for everyone from hiking beginners to experienced trekkers to enjoy the sculptural beauty of nature. Learning about the geographical significance of the watershed adds a layer of discovery beyond a simple walk. Since you will use lifts to reach the high-altitude areas, the journey itself offers wonderful views. After your hike, you can enjoy a profound sense of accomplishment in the crisp, clean air of the highlands.
What to Bring, Clothing, and Etiquette
Mountain weather is highly unpredictable and can change rapidly. Please ensure you bring a rain jacket or waterproof gear. Because of the high altitude, also prepare clothing that can handle temperature fluctuations. The participation fee must be paid on-site on the day of the event. Please follow local rules and maintain proper etiquette when paying. For the latest information regarding lift usage and specific rules, please check the official website.
