Event Overview

Kumata Jinja Natsumatsuri is a traditional festival held annually at the historic Kumata Jinja located in Hirano-ku, Osaka. The festival's origins date back to the early Heian period as a 'Gion-e' ritual to appease plagues and natural disasters. Since the mid-Edo period, it has evolved into a vibrant celebration centered around Mikoshi (portable shrines), Taiko-dai (drum stands), and Danjiri floats. It is a vital event to express gratitude to the gods and pray for the health and safety of the local community.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The greatest thrill of this festival is the dynamic energy of the Danjiri floats, one of the largest scales in Osaka. Currently, nine different neighborhoods (Noto, Naminami, Nobe-kita, Nagare-machi, Ichimachi, Setoguchi-cho, Nishiwaki, Do-do, and Baba) own and parade their massive wooden floats through the streets. The most awe-inspiring moments are the 'Kucho Godo Hikoki' (the unified parade of all nine neighborhoods) and the 'Danjiri Miyairi' (where the floats enter the shrine area), both of which create an overwhelming atmosphere of excitement.

Additionally, you can witness the Mikoshi procession and the sight of young children serving the community in traditional red headgear during the Taiko-dai rituals. As evening approaches, the area around the shrine-approach becomes lively, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the quintessential atmosphere of a Japanese summer festival.

The festival takes place over four days from July 11 to July 14. Please note that the schedule may change depending on the year.

• Approx. 10:00 AM: Mikoshi departure (in front of Kumata Jinja Haiden)

• 3:00 PM: Near Hinoshiri Bridge
• Approx. 5:00 PM: In front of Kumata Jinja Otorii
• Approx. 8:00 PM: Taiko-dai arrives at Kumata Jinja Otorii

• From approx. 9:00 AM: Danjiri parades in each neighborhood
• 9:45 PM: Nanko-dori Unified Parade (The highlight where all nine floats gather)

• From approx. 11:00 AM: Danjiri parades in each neighborhood
• 7:00 PM: Danjiri Miyairi at the front of Kumata Jinja (A high-energy event lasting about 4.5 hours)
