Event Overview

The Mukoda Fire Festival is a signature traditional event held at Iyami Shrine on Notojima, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Held annually on the last Saturday of July, it is celebrated as one of the 'Three Great Fire Festivals of Japan' and is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Ishikawa Prefecture. The sight of the massive torches burning against the night sky is truly a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main highlight is the 'Hashira-taimatsu' (pillar torch), which stands approximately 30 meters tall. Around 8:00 PM, a sacred procession featuring a portable shrine (Mikoshi) carrying a divine light and seven large lanterns (Kiriko) departs from Iyami Shrine toward Sakiyama Plaza. As the signal sounds, crowds of locals and visitors throw straw torches into the massive central pillar. The moment the fire spreads and the structure eventually collapses is a breathtaking, mystical sight. Traditionally, the direction in which the torch falls is believed to predict the success of the fishing and harvest seasons.

The festival takes place on the last Saturday of July every year. The next scheduled date is July 25, 2026.

Tips for Visitors

This is a viewing-focused event. While you can see the massive flames up close, please be aware of the intense heat and smoke. We recommend staying at a local Minshuku (guesthouse) or Ryokan on Notojima to fully immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and enjoy local seafood.
