Event Overview

The "Tsukimi no Kai" (Moon Viewing Festival) at Mukojima Hyakkaen is a traditional autumn celebration dating back to the Edo period. Set within the beautiful, nationally designated landscape garden of Mukojima Hyakkaen, visitors can appreciate the mid-autumn moon alongside authentic Japanese cultural performances. In 2026, the garden will feature extended night hours from September 24 to 26, staying open until 21:00 to allow you to experience the enchanting atmosphere of the garden after dark. This period also coincides with the "Hagi Festival," offering the chance to see the famous "Bush Clover Tunnel" in full bloom.

Highlights & Activities

The main attraction is the soft, warm glow of the "E-andon" (illustrated paper lanterns) placed throughout the garden. As the lanterns light up, you can listen to the elegant melodies of the Koto (Japanese zither). On September 25, a rare performance called "Shinnai Nagashi" will take place, where musicians play the shamisen while walking through the garden. Additionally, you can participate in a seasonal tea ceremony (additional fee required) to enjoy matcha accompanied by seasonal sweets designed to look like silver grass (susuki). It is a perfect way to deeply immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere of a Japanese autumn night.

Venue & Access

The event is held at Mukojima Hyakkaen in Sumida, Tokyo. Access details are as follows:

  • *By Train**: An 8-minute walk from Higashi-Mukojima Station (Tobu Skytree Line) or a 13-minute walk from Keisei-Hikifune Station (Keisei Oshi Line).
  • *By Bus**: Take the Toei Bus "Ri 22" from JR Kameido Station or JR Nippori Station and get off at the "Hyakkaen-mae" bus stop (3-minute walk).
  • *Note**: There is no parking available at the garden, so please use public transportation.

Tips for Visitors

During the night opening, the lighting relies heavily on the decorative lanterns. Since the garden paths consist of natural earth and gravel, it can be dark; we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to join the tea ceremony, please arrive early as it is handled on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event. While the full moon falls slightly differently in 2026, the quiet beauty of the night garden remains a spectacular experience.
